A Note from Dan September always feels like a reset. School is back, commutes change, college students head off, and activities fill the calendar again — and for families with teenagers, sometimes there's a brand-new driver suddenly asking for the keys. With all that change, September is a good time to make sure your insurance still matches the way your family is actually living today.

A New Driver in the Family?

If someone in your household recently got a permit or license — or will be getting one soon — give us a heads-up. Have a Student Away at College?

Where your student lives — and whether they took a car with them — can matter. Dorm? Off-campus apartment? Commuting from home? Car staying home while they're away? Those situations can affect both auto and property coverage differently. They've also probably taken more with them than you realize — laptops, phones, TVs, bicycles, and everything else required to turn a tiny dorm room into "home." One Thing Worth Checking This Month

Has the way you drive changed? Maybe you're commuting again, working from home, or retired. Maybe one of the kids took a vehicle to school — or left one sitting in your driveway. The mileage and use of our vehicles can change considerably without us ever thinking to tell our insurance agent. September is a good time to check.

"My child is away at college. Should they still be on my auto policy?"

There isn't one answer that fits every family. Where your child lives, whether they have a vehicle at school, whether they regularly drive when they're home, and other details can all matter. Around the House

While we're changing seasons, take ten minutes and walk around the outside of your home. Look for clogged gutters, branches hanging over the house, loose railings, signs of water around the foundation, and anything you've been meaning to repair since spring. And if this summer included a bigger project — a finished basement, new roof, pool, addition, solar panels, or significant renovation — let us know. Your home changes over time. Your protection should keep up with it.

One Small Thing You Can Do This Month

Sit down with your new or young driver and agree on the rules before there's a problem. Phones. Passengers. Curfew. Who pays for gas. What happens after an accident. And one especially important rule: if something happens, call home first. A calm plan made ahead of time is much easier to follow on a stressful day.
